Language of Love - A 1st Birthday

Dan (my hubs): Why were you fighting with your brother?

Me: We weren't fighting.

Dan: You were arguing...

Me: No we weren't (with a scoff).

Dan: I heard you both on the other side of the house.

When I got home I called my brother.

Me: Hey Mike?

Mike: Yooo

Me: Were we arguing today?

Mike: Who was?

Me: Me and you!

Mike: I thought we were having a good time?

You see, so did I.
It was our way.
We weren't arguing, we were 'talking' loud.
And maybe even with a hint of sarcasm and a cuss word thrown in for good measure.
We talk with enthusiasm.

Every family has their own secret code.
Years of living in the confines of our homes we have found
ways to communicate beyond words, beyond looks...beyond having to explain what we meant.
Our tone, and the actions, all speak volumes...maybe not to others...but to us.

And beyond a pretty outfit, a cute prop...or a fabulous location for a session - is real life.
The everyday monotony that we are so use to...that we sometimes miss the importance
of just how special it really all is.

When I think back to my childhood, I think about the people who were around me,
the traditions, the smells, and perhaps even the awkward picture that hung on the
wall that made me question if my parents were ever cool.
Everyone's history is in those moments.

When I walked into their house, it was cozy and lively.
The party not only centered around Gianfranco's first birthday, but also around family.

The prosciutto was wrapped around sesame sticks and olives were placed in cute little dishes.

They talked with their hands when words couldn't get their point across,
and pinched tushies as a sign of affection.

There were more kids there than I could count and you couldn't help but feel all of the love in the room.
This was Gianfranco's history. His world. His family and friends - that will all add in
some way to the man he will be one day.
I can think of no better way to bring in your first birthday.

I love the eye contact he had with me.

My favorite! Look at those lush eyelashes. Gahhh!

Chris + Danielle - Vineyard Caterers Winter Wedding

It was a last minute decision. A gut feeling.

You see, I had taken the month of January off to just relax, recharge and rejuvenate.
But what began with 'tell me more' - turned into me saying 'yes' to photographing their big day.

I asked her one question knowing that her answer would decide the fate of whether or not my month off would be postponed:

'If it snows would you be game to play in it?'

When they told me they were actually hoping for some snow and bought boots in preparation,

I knew without a doubt they were my kind of couple!

To tell you the truth, it actually

wasn't really about the snow - it was about living in the moment, and they totally got that.

While the venue, dress and other fabulous details add to the day,
they are only a fraction of the whole experience.
It doesn't really matter if it rains or snows....just whether you are willing to dance during it.
How often does the day come again?!
Live it...fully!

And that they did.
They smiled ear to ear the entire time.

Okay, before I get started, I must say a huge shout out to 'Flowers by Rosemarie' in Sayville.

Her work is by far my verrrry favorite. Just super creative, really fun and different.

I mean pine cones, honey combs, wheat grass, and feathers - love.

I seriously didn't know dogs could smile. I swear this wasn't photoshopped.

It looks like I drew that smile on, doesn't it?!

When she heard there wasn't a pair for her...

The church was the same church Danielle's folks got married in.
The priest was the same priest that baptized her when she was a babe.

and the walk to the man you will be spending the rest of your life with.

We had five minutes.

Even though it was bitter cold, they totally humored me.

The wedding reception was held at the lovely Vineyard Caterers out east.

It would have been a sin not to get one or two shots outdoors.

The next few were taken from the balcony of their bridal suite.

We made it down to the grounds.
By this time the sun was setting and it was beyond freeeeezing!
Such good sports.

Top five...

Coolest: I'm going to go with the bridesmaid gifts. Loved the cozy boots! Okay, I can't stop myself. Here's another. RAINBOW cake!!! No joke.
All I kept hearing from the guests was that it was the best cake they ever had.

Sentimental: Oooh. There were a few. I think it was beautiful that they got married in the same church Danielle's parents wed in. I loved that the church had such history and that the same priest has been there for the last thirty years. When so many things change so fast these days..it got me a little choked up to hear that some things remain the same.
It goes without saying: her Grandma's lace that was added to her veil was great too!

Unique: I adored the rustic vibe of the flowers and all of the fun
elements like the honeycomb and wheat grass.

Funniest: There were a few funny moments, but what made them even better was hearing Chris laugh about them. He has one of the best laughs - hands down. You can't help but smile hearing it. And he is always laughing...which made tons of smiles for everyone that day.

Chris and Danielle, I loved working with you both. You and your families were so gracious and generous that I almost felt like I was with family. Thank you for braving the frigid tempertures with me and not complaining once. Your happiness and enthusiasm was contagious.
It was such an honor to be a part of your happy day.

Hope you have warmed up basking in the Island sun!

Apple, Starbucks and an Adventure - Charlie + Valerie

We were 3,000 miles away on different coasts when we first spoke.

We talked about love, their upcoming wedding day and everything in between.

Life is funny that way. Sometimes a stranger can feel like a long lost friend.

That's how I felt with Valerie. I liked her from our very first e-mail.
I'm pretty sure, though, that's how everyone must feel when they meet Valerie.
She has this fabulous enthusiasm and charm that just pulls you right in.

They met at Starbucks.

Valerie told me that when she first saw Charlie there, he was intently
reading a book (about computers) and she was intrigued.
Fast forward a few years later,
they're now engaged and his career with Apple led them both venturing
out to the west coast together.

***

I love new beginnings. Any kind of new start really.
Whether it's a new career, a new town or a new relationship.
They are the moments of possibility.
Where dreams sort of exist in reality. The fear of the unknown dares us to come out of hiding.
We would never know the other side unless we took a step in that direction.
It can be uncomfortable. It can be scary. Or you can make it an adventure worth having.
It's all in the way we look at it.
Valerie and Charlie look at life that way I think...and each other.
Love is perhaps the biggest and greatest adventure of all.
It reveals it's story one moment at a time and who better to share that with than your best friend.

Here's to a life of adventure and all the possibilities it brings to you both!

Apple is committed to making touch screens flow more like a gesture than a command.

I liked that.

I will be photographing their Long Island wedding at the charming 'Three Village Inn'.

Speaking of charm, how about a little rustic charm...

As the light was fading they did a quick outfit change to get a cozy look in.

I love everything that that word conjures up.

The Book of Love - Chris + Danielle - Long Island Engagement

She is a librarian.
Have you ever heard of anything so cute?!

Just when I thought the world of books had met their fate with the Nooks, Kindles and Ipads -
there was Danielle who still uses the Dewy system. I literally sighed in relief.

It's the classic case of boy meets girl.

Their beautiful beginning began among rows of books at a library where they both work.

It took him almost a year to work up his nerve to even talk to her.

I think The Monotones asked the most perplexing question ever:
'Who wrote the book of love?'

While we all may search for the answers,
we are actually in charge of our own fate with each turn of a page.
We are the authors of our story.

Each new chapter that we write can be savored or dwelled upon.
We have a choice.

While we are all busy looking for that happy ending -- the pages in between are being written.

And it's those pages, those moments, those every day minuet minutes that are what life is made up of.

We all have a story to tell. And maybe that's why I love pictures so much. They help tell our story.

They help us reference our lives. The story may be our own, but the best ones are shared with others.
That's why I do this blog.
In a world that is filled with heart wrenching news, it's nice to hear of happiness.

People who found love and couples that make each other happy.

'Peace, love and joy' should be celebrated throughout our lives, not just on special occasions.
Love should be lived, not just felt.

Every story has three parts: a beginning, a middle, and an end.
And although this is how all stories unfold, I'm pretty sure Danielle and Christopher's will go on forever.

It's the main reason why I love my job.
I get to see, hear and feel the stories that are behind every single image.

What kind of December session would this be without a Christmas tree?! So I snuck one in.

High School Sweethearts - Jessica + Jonathan

Do you remember your first crush? First love?

First, can't sleep at night 'cause you can't stop thinking about them?

We all have one.

Do you remember what it felt like?

It's that giddy, light headed feeling.

It's the feeling that you can't stop smiling ear to ear.

There are butterflies in your stomach, a twinkle in your eye and permanent blush on your cheeks.
Now just imagine the chance to be married to your first love.
Pretty dang sweet if you ask me.

First love.

As amazing and as memorable as it is -
most of the time when we grow up we move on because things change.

We change.

Along with our thoughts, our feelings, and sometimes our love.

But, for some of the lucky few, it stays the same.

Some get to grow old together.

Meet Jessica and Jonathan.

High school sweethearts...that never really ever got a chance to become an 'old flame'.

Instead their flame seems to just get brighter - especially with the news of their upcoming wedding.

They still have that twinkle in their eyes and the giddy smiles that love can't keep at bay.

I just love how their cheeks fit together. Like a puzzle...

All they did was smile at each other.

Not just smiling...happy smiling.

Justin + Justine - Long Island Wedding at Jericho Terrace

Sometimes, pictures tell a thousand words right? I'm actually banking on that today.

Instead of spending the time to write the blog post, I wanted to spend the time including a few more images.

It's been a busy season and I have much to do before the holiday,

but I wanted to stop in real quick to give you all a little sneaky peek of J+J's happy day!

Since the ceremony started at 7:30 we didn't have the luxury of light so we went
for the moody, romantic stuff.

I stole the couple for a few minutes to capture the following few...

We'll end on this note...

Favorite Moment: I'm not going to pin point a moment here.
I'm just going to say that it was the fact that they partied. They enjoyed every moment.

They had fun with the day and they truly collaborated together on it.

Coolest: The entrance. They were announced like heavy weight fighters. And instead of the arch the bridal party normally goes under - they all met on the dance floor to celebrate the beginning of the evening with a shot toast. Nothing like setting the night off right.

Sentimental: Justin made a memory book for Justine that was given to her while she was prepping. Aww.

Unique: The wax seals. I adored them. Such an elegant, unique...time consuming touch!

Funniest: When Justine's Dad started talking about when he was in bed with her mother.
It had that awkward moment for a second, but he set us up.
He was telling the story of the night Justine was born...um not made. lol

Anna + Frank - Long Island Engagement Session

"What is one thing I love about Anna?"

He repeated it back to me like he needed extra time to think.

It wasn't though that it was hard for him to think about one thing he loved,

it was hard for him to narrow it down to just one.
I ummmm think ; )

After a slight pause, he said it was her laughter.
How once she starts, it would be a good ten minutes before she stops.

Her ability to laugh so easily and his ability to really enjoy it is what I love most about them.

They were silly, they were sweet, and they were fun.
They also flew in from Colorado for their e-session...
okay not just for their e-session but it sounded good, no? ; )
They came down to spend the best day of the year, Thanksgiving, celebrating
with family and friends as well as tying up loose ends for their wedding.

Anna and Frank are a little special.
So, I'm going to nix the 'small' (haha - when are my blog posts ever 'small')
talk and dive right into it 'cause this is a bigger 'sneak peek' than usual.

You see...Anna is one of my sister's BFF's.

I knew her back when 90's music was cool.

While this should make me feel old - seeing Anna with her love, Frank, makes me feel young at heart.

'I hope you dance...'

and live life with all heart...

They're in love.

Or as some of you have come to know...my 'frame within a frame' shot I try to do at each session.

The Kitchen Table - Domenic + Shannon

The kitchen table.

That was her answer.

And no, I wasn't asking questions 'Newlywed Game' style! ; )

The question was, 'Where is your favorite place?'

She went on to say that it was a place of 'communication whether serious or comical.'

It had to be hands down my favorite answer.

The kitchen is the hub in most homes. It's where we come together, to talk, to laugh, to cry...to eat, drink and be merry. There is no other room in a home quite like it. Or any place for that matter.

Did you notice how I didn't mention cook...that wasn't an over sight on my part! ; )

With the TV, computers and our phones it's hard for any of us to sit still these days.

But a kitchen table you see forces us to do just that.

While sipping our hot coffee, tea or wine we are focusing on none other then the

person across from us and the words between us.

And it's the words between us that will actually bring us closer together.

It's a place to debate, to discuss, to make jokes, and to tease.

Without the outside world stealing out attention words 'weigh' more.

We don't just hear them, we almost feel them because we are able to take into consideration other things.
The tone of each syllable and the body language that accompanies every word.
The smiles that reach the eyes, and the lingering glances studying each others faces.

Domenic and Shannon I love that one of your favorite places is the kitchen table.
It's a small sentiment to who you are and what you are like when you are together.
Thank you for letting me capture a little glimpse into your world...

We were lucky enough to get the last few hints of color mid-November....

Thankful - A Follow Up If You Were Following

I'm thankful to be able to do what I love to do.

I thought that this would be no more than a glorified hobby,
and it has not only become my career of some sort, but a huge part of my life.

I have been fortunate enough to be blessed with the most wonderful clients ever.

Each client who is actually now a friend.

I still get excited when I get an e-mail from my web-site about a prospect/client.
It's my first peek into their world. Sometimes they tell me a little about themselves;
sometimes they even talk about some of you -
and what they have read and have seen here from what I post.

Opening those e-mails is like opening up an unexpected gift. It never get's old for me.

The day that I opened one up from some random person about the whole grammar thing -
it was the last thing I expected. It caught me completely off guard.
I felt like the girl with her skirt stuck in her stockings, who is showing off her rear to the world.
As if that wasn't bad enough -
getting a letter sent home about it...after spending the day out and about. Oy vey!

As mortified, humiliated and sad as I was - believe it or not I was thankful.

'Cause really...you want to know when you have spinach in your teeth, right?

I kinda felt that way a little.

I also thought - 'wow...85% of my clients are teachers,

and if he is saying something about my grammar...what are they seeing and not saying?!'

I tried to ignore it, but I couldn't. I wanted to address it, but I didn't want to come off as a whiner
or sound bitter over the whole thing. I agonized over it and then came to the conclusion
that some people will accept it and some might become more aware of my weakness.
It is what it is.

I wasn't really expecting a response. I was just really posting a 'disclosure.'
But the notes that flooded my e-mail, this blog and my FB wall were some
of the most touching things I have ever read.

All I can say is thank you.

From my toes to my nose, I'm filled with gratitude for what you all have given me:
the wonderful comments, the heartfelt words. The passion. The sincerity.

Each and every one of you that took the time out of your day to write to me -

words fall short of what it meant to me.

I have much to be thankful for this year as I do every day.

This little business has gone in a direction that I never expected or saw coming.

I wouldn't be here today without the help of the most wonderful people ever.

My family, who puts up with my crazy schedule,
late nights and cereal on the table some nights instead of a hot meal;
my husband who has gotten me through this hectic season by helping out with the kids
and taking off from work to balance the craziness;
my sister for all the little things that add up to be huge;

my graphic designer who is sooo patient with me, and not only comes up

with fabulous unique designs, but is also at times my therapist.
Not that I really need one ; )

Full Circle - Mindy, Shawn and Marc

The boxes were filled to the brim in neat stacks all around the perimeter of their apartment.

They were in the process of purchasing a new home, and pretty soon they

would be leaving their old place behind.

Their old place that was a treasure trove of fond memories for them...and for me.

You see it was where I photographed Mindy getting ready in her wedding gown.

And it was where we peeked out the living room window to spy on her soon to be husband outside adjusting his tie.
It was where I listened to three generations sing some crazy happy song while prepping Min for the big day.

We also watched their wedding

slideshow huddled shoulder to shoulder
together on my computer at their dining table.
It was where I met their new son for the first time and did his newborn session and it's also a place that they will soon be telling Marc they once had all lived when he was little.

We strolled along the paths around the pond at their complex, and I thought back to when I first met them. It was a couple of years back when we sat in a little coffee shop planning their engagement session. It was hard to believe that now we were running after their happy little one year old.
For me it was more then a session, it was a moment that came full circle.

Full circle is a concept that we have all heard before.
To most it means merely coming back to where it all began.

For me it means being complete. Undivided. Whole.

Life moves on. Things change. We live and we grow.
Life may change around us - but sorta like the saying 'no matter where we go - there we are.'
I like to think that's cause we take moments and memories with us.

Each circle has a beginning, but really no end.
The end is just a new beginning when coming full circle.
Seneca said it best, 'Every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end.'

Seeing where it began for you both and how far you have come - was like reading a book with a fabulous ending and finding out there was a sequel.

What a difference a year makes, eh?

I brought along the same Christmas stocking to see how much he grew.

Marc was just as surprised as I was!

Hands down - one of the best kids I have ever ~~worked~~ played with.

He seriously smiled the entire time.

Except for this shot. ; )

A little reminiscent of 'Home Alone' I think.

My most favorite family images are those that are some what casual and in the moment.

In between a laugh, a tight squeeze or sometimes mid-sentence.

There are no words really to express what it's like to see a client living their happiest moments and watching the unmistakable looks of joy while documenting their lives.
There is nothing that makes me quite so happy as being there to experience that moment with them.

You know when you hear someone get the case of the giggles and you can't help but smile?
You know the smile. That big dopey, cheesy grin that just overtakes your whole face
and you feel giddy inside?!

That's how I feel when I'm with my clients.
That is what you give to me Mindy and Shawn (and now Marc) every time I see you.

Thank you for having trust and faith and for continuing to share your milestones with me.

Spelling, Grammar and Moments

Recently, it was brought to my attention that - to put it frankly - my grammar sucks.

This character weakness is well known. I don't exactly hide it here.

It's something I pretty much knew, but I guess not to the point that I recently heard about it. It was the type of thing where upon hearing it, I wanted to crawl into bed and pull the blankets over my head for being so terribly embarrassed.

I actually for a moment thought of not writing here anymore.

Just like all things domestic - there are some things I'm good at, and others...not so much.

I'll let you guess which way the domestic thing rolls for me.

I first want to apologize for my crazy slang, half sentences or run on sentences. I'm far from being proper.

I may write 'here' instead of 'hear' or 'there' instead of 'their'.

I may have a comma or an apostrophe out of place too.

I do know better.

But you see, sometimes I forget I'm writing to all of you.

When I write, it's as if I'm writing in a journal for myself.

The words pour out quicker than I can type them.

I'm not thinking grammatically; I'm thinking of just putting the point down on paper to remind myself of a moment or of a thought before giving in to my drooping eyelids.

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't believe me if I told you I actually do proof read what I write. But those 3am late nights are tough. I'm tapping away at the keyboard after putting in a full day and sometimes there is not much else left for my brain to give at that point. Especially going on three hours of sleep from the night before.

It's a poor excuse, but it's my reality right now.

While I would hate for you to think of me any less professional or educated than I am -

I would rather you walk away thinking I'm real.

I make mistakes. I think out loud. I write personally, not professionally.

I'm not perfect and I hope you still like me that way.

And maybe that's not the best approach.

And maybe I shouldn't be starting my sentences with 'and' or 'but' or 'because'. But sometimes I do.

I may write that way because of how it's forming in my head or maybe just for effect...or is it affect?! ; )

And that's okay. Because this here is my world.

Some of you may be completely turned off by it and I completely get it.

Some of you may see it as quirky and partially acceptable and not judge me by it.

For those of you in the latter group, I love you for it.

I promise to try harder to watch the grammar or spelling errors but don't hold me too it.

'Cause even though I promise to work harder on getting the house together...

we all know how that sometimes goes. ; )

On a side note, it was also mentioned that this blog does not give off a

'good first impression' because of everything mentioned above.

And this is what broke my heart a little.

This blog is really not to impress anyone.

It's to document life. It's a peek into moments that would otherwise go by unnoticed.

Sometimes we all get caught up in perfection. I'm no stranger to that.

Sometimes though life is not about the perfect picture or the perfect blog post -

it's about seeing the perfect moment.

Balance - Carolyn + Anthony

His eyes actually twinkled when he talked about the elaborate ideas he has for their wedding day.

Carolyn rolls her eyes and fakes being uninterested, while throwing her head back in laughter

like she does often when he talks.

You can't help but be amused by his enthusiasm.

Or by their 'he said, she said' hysterical way of debating.

While he would prefer their day to be over the top - she prefers it to be sophisticated and elegant.

Like a teeter totter that can't make up it's mind, the balance shifts left to right.

It finally finds a steady rhythm and then comfortably rests in the middle:

among compromise.

Their like yin and yang - the best of both worlds.

Their individuality is not lost being together, but complimented. Beautifully.

Together they're balanced.

No matter how we look at life - it's always a balancing act.

We all have too many pots on the stove and too many balls in the air.

It's hard to prioritize when everything and everyone seems to need our attention.

Life is about compromise though, and never is it more apparent then when melting two lives together.

The biggest hurdle we as couples all face is finding balance.

Sometimes it feels as if we will never get there.

That the climb is too high to ever feel satisfied with where we are.

Maybe it's not about getting to where we want to go, but being happy with where we are.

Maybe that's balance?!

Do we like the direction we are going in and who we are going with?

We have all heard time and time again: it's about the journey, not the destination.

The 'ride' - whether it's down your road or someone elses -

is best when enjoying the company and the view...not thinking about how to get there.

Decisions are better when met in the middle.

By doing that, we are not choosing who's 'road' may be best,

but rather paving a new one and in turn creating our very own 'memory lane'.

Life is meant to go off course.

Sometimes we will get our way, sometimes we won't.

Sometimes the road less traveled is the one you never knew you

wanted until someone else brought you down it.

One way is not better than the other. Maybe it's all in the way we look at it.

Compromise = balance.

Playing it 'fifty-fifty' or going in 'half and half'...makes any marriage a 'win-win'.

I about died when they told me they got a permit for this location.

Anthony has a way of making people laugh, especially Carolyn.

And Carolyn has a way of laughing with all heart.

And just in case you wanted to see it in color...

So there is a rule in photography not to shoot into the sun.

But all rules are made to be broken, eh?

I'm diggin' the square crop on this too.

Couples that play together...stay together...

I can't help but grin a big goofy smile when I

Because we are not just taking a picture, we are enjoying a soon to be memory.
I love that you get that.

Double the Fun - The 'E' Family

Ohh how the time is flying.

This month is very, very crazy for me, but I wanted to give you all one or

two quick teasers from last weeks session.

Hopefully after this week I will be caught up enough to do a full blog post.

But for now...let's start with these two, 6 month old twin cuties and of coarse a quote to go with it!

Come on now...look at that face...and those eyes!!

and his brother...is full of the same exact cute-ness!

What super adorable babies...that have the most amazing eyes ever.

I love the interaction of twins.

Back to the Future -Tara + Mike

I tried imagining her telling Mike that she had won the matching wedding bands in a contest...
before they were even engaged.

I tried to think what he would have thought or how he would have reacted.

I'm pretty sure it would be the same as any other time I have seen them together.
She just looks at him and his stoic expression softens and a smile comes to his lips.

You know the one when the smile reaches the eyes?

She makes the poor boy melt.

It's not lost on him either.

As the cars drove past us slowing down to get a glimpse of them during their engagement
session he said, 'right now they are saying 'I wonder what that poor sucker did to lose the bet'?!'

And she would grab his arm tightly...actually no...wrap herself around his arm tightly and bury her head into his body to stifle her fit of giggles.

You can't help but be amused by her.

Like the bubbliest champagne that can't be contained in the tallest of flutes.
She overflows with enthusiasm and affection.
And it's contagious.

PDA - Public Display of Affection - would pretty much sum up Tara and Mike.
Not in a gross way though.
Like in the cuddly, cozy, can't get enough of you way.
She can't simply sit next to him - she has to be touching him.
At one point when I asked her to separate herself from him just for a sec...

she looked like she was gonna die.
I'm pretty sure she was just looking for some mouth to mouth though!
Yes. I went there.

We spend the brisk moments after sunrise walking the cobblestone lined streets of a hidden gem of a town nestled within what was once part of the Vanderbilt Estate in Oakdale.
It was a charming piece of history that was sorta magical.
Reminiscent of a bygone era that you couldn't help but wish to have been a part
of when seeing the surroundings.

There was a spark of electricity in the air that made it feel like we had gone back in time.
When flirting mattered, and being glamorous was sexy.
Back in the day when they tried harder and weren't so lazy.
When going on long walks, and fun car drives were spent in each others company
and not texting to someone else.

We multi task too much these days and it's nice to be reminded to slow down a bit.
I think we can learn a lot by looking back...
to hopefully the future once again.
You know what they say...'what was once old is new again.'
Let's hope so.
I like the 'trend' Mike and Tara are starting.

So much so, that they are having their entire wedding album in black and white.
I would be remiss not to include a few here.

The smooches, the hugs and hand holding - all just make my heart happy.

The Game of Love - Vic + Nicolle

They were friends.

But when they made plans to go and grab a bite to eat and he opened the car door,

she knew it was a date.

They were both coaching separate basketball teams at the

time and when their paths ended up crossing - it was just the right time.

And that's where their story begins.

Love is a game, no matter how we look at.

There is a 'give and take'. Ebb and flow. And a winning and losing side.

But like Grantland Rice once said,

'it's not whether you win or lose - it's how you play the game.'

Now some may argue that, but

I think he could have been on to something.

We have all played defense and offense at least once in our lives in a relationship.

But really, if we tried playing on the same team - it's so much easier.

And no. I don't mean like that. ; )

I mean, if you don't worry about keeping score (with each other) -

you'll just enjoy the 'game' so much better.

When you have the same direction, the same game plan - life and love is easier to navigate.

Life puts us all through a bunch of hoops some times and it's nice to have someone there to pull us through.

That's a concept that's not lost on Vic and Nicolle.

Maybe they said it best when describing their relationship in one word, 'harmonious'.

Harmonious.

Good word, right?

I think if your relationship stays defined by that word there is no question in my mind

that you both 'could...go...alllll...the...way!!!'

Love and Marriage - The 'A' Family

The most fabulous compliment in the world to me is when a bride comes back to visit me

and have their family pictures taken as well.

I love getting to spend time with them, and seeing how their families are growing.

Another reason why it's a huge compliment? Because, let's face it.

Portrait photography is a little pricier then your typical Sears or Target.

I get it, and I realize that they are investing not only in their memories, but in me to preserve them.

It's something I don't take lightly and something that just tugs at my heart.

I can't even begin to tell you how much it means to me.

Some of you may remember Veronica and Steven from their wedding this past September?

Well, we got together again last weekend and had a fun family session.

It was extra fun because they came supplied with Munchkins!!

I mean now that is thinking! : )

So here's the thing about a family pic.

You want everyone to look good, be well behaved and sit still.

It's totally not easy. I'll be the first to tell you.

You see the little man on the left hand side?

He wanted to play and I don't blame him, and while ideally you would have thought a traditional pose of having him sitting up straight would have worked better - his lounge position totally makes this picture for me. It shows so much personality and character.

I love when things fall into place like that.

Brothers, twins, room mates...best friends...

I love when a little bit of personality shines through in an otherwise traditional picture.

Okay, I know Mom is not going to be crazy about the middle pic, but you know - I have a picture of me when I was younger like that...and it's actually one of my favorites.

I love the emotion and realness of the moment. It makes me actually lol - for real.

Ahhh you make it look soooo easy...

So, I'm a huge believer that the outfits are half the battle when making an image 'flow'.

Marietta has a gift of pulling the 'look' all together. I was in awe, I was envious,

I wanted her immediately to start shopping for my family.

Such impeccable style.

Content - The 'C' Family Kids

I'm not sure they even stopped to breath when I was there.

At 2, 3 and 4 there is no such thing as sitting really.

Well, maybe if you include sitting for a half a second and then jumping out of your seat for no apparent reason -
other then to run in a totally different direction just for the heck of it.

Ahhhh to be a kid.

I felt at home there.

I felt that someone could relate to my world.

We tried to sit in trees, we tried to sit in a leaf pile, we tried to sit on a hammock,
we tried everything we could to keep them still...but then
really from a kids point of view, where is the fun in that?! ; )

And that's just it.

When kids are in their element you may not get the perfect pose,

but hopefully what you do get is that relaxed, expression of your children looking content.

And isn't that really what we all strive for?

Contentment.

As crazy and as lively as the afternoon was - it was nice because we were just in the moment.

A moment that will actually pass quicker then it will ever sometimes seem.

When looking at Mom's memories on the wall I saw that she was fond of b/w images -
so I decided to go that route this time around for the blog!

Look at that mischievous grin...

She took a little while to warm up, but we got there.

I love the sweetness of her smile.

Believe it or not this shot was taken mid way through her sprinting in the backyard -

I called her name and she turned quickly toward me and this is what we caught.

annnd right before they pushed each other off - they really looked liked they liked each other ; )

I think being content is not something that we should strive for, it's something we should create.

In our everyday hours there are fleeting moments of this, if we just have a second to take it all in.

And as hard as it may be to see sometimes...

when you do catch it, hold onto it with both hands...cause these are the

moments in between the craziness of life that we want to remember.

Nay, never forget.

And if you want a little play on words...

Being content is the content of a full life. ; )

My Mom's Best Advice About Marriage

Say, 'maybe'.

Never say 'no'.

God, it sounds so ridiculously simple doesn't it?

Yet, I thought it was the stupidest advice ever.

When Dan and I got married a lot was happening in our lives.

We had met in June and by December we were engaged.

I know. I see some eyes rolling.

Sometimes when you know, you know.

6 months later we were married.

The 'in between' during those six months was crazy though.

We were under an enormous amount of pressure from crazy life situations.

I was in a new management position at work.
I was read my last rights in a hospital because of something that happened to my gallbladder.
Someone blew a red light and I was in a horrible car accident

and my car was totaled.

Our extra car on hand was broken into.

We were in the process of buying a house.

My grandmother died and his grandmother died within a month of each other...(before the wedding).

Oh. And yeahh...we had a little thing called a 'wedding' to plan then too.

Some of you know how much stress that is alone.

Everything seemed overwhelming.

When we had moved into our new home a month before our wedding

we were bickering about everything. We couldn't agree on freakin' tooth paste.

It was nuts.

We each had our own ideas on what should be done first on the house
and neither of us wanted to compromise.
Every time either of us opened our mouths the

other would just say 'no' to whatever the question was.

'I want to re-do the floors.'

'No, not right now.'

'I want to get a new tool.

'No, not right now.'

The more we said no to each other, the more the other dug their heels in.

We all want to be heard.

We all want our ideas to be taken into consideration.

By saying 'maybe', no one is on the defense.

There is still time to talk it over, and discuss the pros and cons.

One day I tried it.

Dan walked in the room and said

'I think we should take the tax money and put it towards the loan on the car.'

That was the money we spoke about going to our 1970's nasty kitchen.

I was devastated.

My first reaction was 'no' - actually it was more like 'noooo waaaaay'.

On the inside.

Well, if you really want to get technical there may or may not have had an explicit thrown in the middle.

But instead I bit my tongue (~~it may have bled~~) and said 'maybe'.

All of a sudden his demeanor softened and he wasn't ready for combat.

It was much different talking to someone that wasn't expecting a fight.

I was able to listen to him and even - sighhhh- agree with him a little.

He was right in a way. Key word 'in a way'.

By listening and not getting defensive I was able to see it meant more to him then it did to me.

So instead of giving in I was able to agree.

A few weeks had passed and I had asked him something equally important that was
going to cause WW3 - although I can't even remember what it was.

I remember bracing myself.

He didn't say 'no' though, he said 'maybe'.

I was sitting on our couch with my feet up,

thinking we were finally on the right track to compromise, and honestly it was so much less exhausting.

The crucial point though was when he turned to walk away,

I saw a slight smile come to his face...kinda like he got away with something.

And all of a sudden it hit me...

'YOU, TALKED TO MY MOTHER!

It wasn't a question it was a statement.

We both broke out in a fit of laughter.

Almost ten years later we still use it...even though we both know that we may be

using it to pacify the other person. It's not lost on us. We get it.

It taught us actually to see what the other person was saying.

Listen, think about it, and discuss it rationally.

Marriage is work - no matter how you look at it.

There is an ebb and a flow to it.

There is no right or wrong way to go about it.

Everyone is different and that's just the point.

We all have different ways to look at something.

And perhaps Antoine de Saint Exupery said it best,

'love does not consist of gazing at each other, but in looking outward together in the same direction.'

Sometimes it's good to ask for directions.

'In Between' - Long Island Family Session

Do you remember being one?

It's a shame we don't right?

It's a time in our lives when our wonder and our innocence's was so pure, so magical.

A leaf, a raindrop or a blade of grass was enough to purse our lips in a permanent 'o', or illicit happy giggles.

Although we can remember it, we get the privilege to see it through our children's eyes.

At one, personalities start to emerge and they are learning so many new things.

The world is big from where they stand, and our job is to instill in them that they can conquer it.

Before the pressure and the stress that society places on them begins,

before they are out of feetie pajamas, you're gonna wish you caught the magic.

The magic may not be the perfect smile, nor the perfect outfit -

but maybe perhaps the perfect expression.

The curiosity.

The amusement.

The moments in between (haha - get it ; ) 'in between'.

A Little Help From My Friends...

So this week I learned about something kinda cool.

See, there is this thing on my blog that let's you see how many people have visited.

And this past week I hit 20,000.

So whether you are new to visiting this blog, or you come here often...thank you.

Or come to think of it...maybe I should be thanking only my mother?! ; )

I started this blog to not only show clients 'teasers', but to share a little bit about me,
and maybe some underlining messages...

Recently the wedding publication 'The Knot' sent an e-mail letting us (photographer's)

The 'pick' is an honor they give to vendor's by acknowledging that clients matter.

Powder Puff - 'Make-Up Monday'

Sooo...I think I'm kinda like every other week as far as the 'Make-Up Monday's'.

How's that all working out for you?

Well, I tried something new last week that I'm kinda diggin'.

I have been looking for a translucent powder for a while to take care of the shine and stumbled across

A-D Mally Poreless Face Defender.

It's revolutionary powder if you ask me.

It's powder but it's not. Almost like a gel really, but goes on matte.

It's sooo strange - you really need to try it out for yourself!

It really held up well for me and did it's job.

It didn't feel stiff, mask like or cakey - just really lightweight.

The coolest thing is, is that it's clear. I know. I don't get it either.

So, while they call it 'poreless' that's not really what sold me.

(I think they may have meant 'poor'less when you see how much it will set you back.)

A little goes a long way with this product though, so keep that in mind.

What sold me is that it combats my shine and also locks my make up in place.

Since it's not a powder it also didn't have the ability to settle into fine lines - another plus.

I'm a recent fan and it's gotten about 4.8 stars out of 5 on QVC.

'Working' Mother's - A Family Session

I knew Carissa back when talking about the federal reserve, general ledgers,

and debits and credits would fill my days.

I knew her when the 'boys' in our lives

where the guys we were dating, and not our sons.

Back in our former lives, our paths would cross once in a while,

and I was always happy to see her.

She always had a smile, and she was super ambitious - working her way up from

a bank teller to the branch manager at a bank in Manhattan.

I remember the first time someone asked me,

'Are you a working mother?' I felt a pang of guilt.

What does that really mean anyway?

Does it mean you work out of the home, or your work at home is never done?

Either way it felt very much the same.

For as much as I felt I had accomplished in my professional career, motherhood by far trumped it all.

I stared at Adryanna when I was home on maternity leave
wondering what the heck I was going to do for three months when all she did was sleep.

So, I began making scrap books, I took pictures, I stayed up late.

I fell in love a little with photography.

I read magazines. I read books.

I watched TV for crying out loud. Like every week. Grey's Anatomy actually.

It felt like a mini vacation really.

Yet, for some reason I looked forward to going back to work and having a routine.

Call me crazy, but I missed hearing adult conversation,

putting my make up on in the morning...annnd getting out of my pajamas.

But, the night before I had to return to work I cried myself to sleep.

I didn't think there was possibly another person in the world

who could take care of her like I would.

I was torn.

I enjoyed my career, but I loved this new little person so much,

I couldn't stand being away from her.

It's a personal choice. It's a hard choice. It's a choice that you really can't fathom until the day comes.

Living on Long Island our choice is almost made for us.

Expenses are high, and so is health care insurance. The need for a double income is almost a necessity.

Somehow though, among all of the life's big decisions-

while we are planning our future,

our present days are passing us quicker then we think.

Carissa told me she was thinking of waiting until his first birthday to do the session.

Then she thought about waiting until the baby weight was gone.

She realized though she needed to catch the moment though before it past her.

The wonder in their eyes, their off balance teetering when trying out those chubby feet.

This time in our lives will suddenly be our 'yesterday'.

One day soon, in the blink of an eye - just like those old folks told you when you were a kid - we'll say,

' I remember you when you were thiiiiis little', while holding our hand up to knee height.

And we will smile because we know that indeed we really do remember,

because a picture won't let us forget.

Because you don't want to forget their first few steps with you...

Because someone in the family is always missing because they're taking the picture...

Because you should have pictures of the two of you other then your wedding ones...

Because almost all of your photo's are taken on your iphone.

Because never will a leaf be this entertaining when you're an adult...

Because your children should know what life was like when you were in your prime...

Because a few minutes taken to enjoy and experience today,

will have lasting effects on how you see tomorrow.
But more importantly...how they see it.

Enjoy the little moments...for some day you may look back and realize, they were the 'big' ones.

And while I should know this and I do...I was among the ones who thought,

Maternity and Newborn Long Island Photographer

Bump to Baby

I'm sure her Mom didn't think she was talking to her future son in law when
her daughter handed her the phone.
In fact, I'm sure she thought he was a bit crazy when he told her that
he was going to marry her daughter someday...and she had yet to even meet him!

If you're anything like me, you enjoy hearing the stories of my couples and families.

It really makes a difference in the pictures for me to know where it all began.

So a few weeks ago I did their maternity session.
They were a little shy about a blog post - so we held off.
But...while at their house this weekend to welcome their baby girl with her first photo shoot,
we talked about adding a few images while still respecting their privacy
by not posting names or their full story.
They agreed!

Meet the new Mom and Dad...

Their beautiful daughter made her arrival a whole month early.
Super happy we got the maternity session done in time!

While at their home they had showed me a Similac advertisement they liked.
We tried our own version.
Although it's not black and white, I kinda like the monochromatic look -
and I think it totally matches the gingham walls in the nursery guys!

I added the wording because...well, I felt like it! : )

I wish I could have had all of you in the house with us while we had the session.
They were the cutest parents ever. And Mom had the cutest hat ever!
Not to mention the cutest babe ever!

This session was super cool because the parents were game to do more of a 'lifestyle' session.
It was something different I wanted to try because I love seeing
the interaction of new parents with their new little bundle.
I think posed shoots are fun too...but there is something about relationships that really hit home for me.

I will be incorporating more of this kind of style into my sessions if the parents are up to it.
I think no matter how tired you are, or how you really don't think you look good enough to be photographed now - it should be documented.
Suck it up. Trust me. ; )
You'll want to remember these moments when they are heading off to their prom.

I adored documenting such a special time in your life.
And I loved seeing it come full circle.

Brayden - Long Island Newborn Session

Change

It takes two hours to get out of the house.
No joke.
Between the bottles, the diapers, the wipes, the stroller, the carrier,
getting the baby ready, and soothing the baby in between...oh, wait.
Did I mention you still have to get ready?!
Never mind. That doesn't really matter anymore. ; )

The stillness and quite cycle of your daily routine sort of shifts into overdrive
when greeted with a brand new baby.
The excitement and newness are mixed with the interpretation of
'what did we just do' and 'this is the best thing ever'.

You're life will never be your own again. Your heart will permanently live outside your body.
This tiny little bundle that you just met, somehow changes your world...forever.
There are other things too that come with a baby besides cute toes,
lots of love and taking two hours to get out of your home.
Baby gear.
You know that stuff that just seems to morph into mountains overnight?
All I know is that the coffee table that I spent two months trying to find,
all of a sudden got replaced with the baby swing and Pack and Play.
I still don't know if all of this 'stuff' is a help or a hindrance.
I don't however want to test it though. ; )

It's hard to believe at one point you thought wedding planning was tough.
Now sleepless nights, and a new found obstacle coarse through out your home,
somehow pales in comparison. Well, just like everything really after a baby.
It's greater then anything you could have ever possibly imagined.

It's hard to picture the days before they were born, right?
And I hate to say it...but it will be hard to picture the days
when they were this little when they are all grown up.

Thanks to Tara's friends at her baby shower...Dan and Tara will remember.

They'll remember how alert he was.
They'll remember how tiny his hands were, and how adorable he looked all cuddled up with silly hats on.

I think when they look back they will remember too, the change that forever changed them.

But most of all they will remember the generosity of friends that gave
them the gift of treasuring a moment that goes by all too fast.

I ain't gonna lie. Baby 'B' made me totally work for it.

And just when we (the folks and I) were almost giving up.

We won.

Although, I think he let us...

Thanks Tara and Dan for being so patient during the session. You were such trooper's.

I can't tell you how much I appreciate that.

I hope it was worth the wait...

Megan + Steven - Northport, Long Island Engagement Session

First Crush

Everyone has one.

And I bet you can recall almost everything about them to this day.

Odd things too.

Maybe it was the way they smiled just a tad bit crooked. Their day to day routine.

All of the idiosyncrasies that made them just so damn cute.

You tried to ignore them, but you were drawn to them like a magnet.

Every song lyric would remind you of them, and every lead in a movie

you pictured the both of you playing the main roles. Okay. Maybe that was just me. ; )

They're odd those first crushes. They hit you out of no where.

You wake up one morning day dreaming about this stranger making you pancakes
and the wedding dress you're going to be wearing down the aisle.

And that's precisely what happened when Megan was 14 and she saw Steven for the first time.

She gets almost giddy when recalling seeing him for the first time in his white tank top and spiked hair.

He lowered his eyes, blushing and smiling slightly as she told the tale.

Megan and her best friend would spy on the guys when they hopped on their motorcycles,
and chase them half way down the block when they drove off trying to get one last look.

They spent days dreaming about marrying them.

Five years later, Steven and Megan's paths crossed,
and he was lucky enough to get her phone number.
He held it for a moment, and said ' I don't think I can wait 24 hours to call you.'

(Ohhh...you men...know just the right words ; )

She debated going on a date with him...and her best friend convinced her she should.
'Just once...so you can say you did.'

I found that part funny. Years of chasing him in her dreams,
yet scared when it might have a chance for it become a reality...or even scarier. Not.

She upped her best friend though I think...by getting engaged to him!

Your imagination goes a little crazy, and you dream and wish silly things.
You obsess and you set yourself up for super high expectations.
I mean, what person can live up to the wonderfulness (yes, I just made that word up),
that we pretend them to be before meeting them?!
And yet...Steven was all that, and then some.

It goes almost without saying I think he made out pretty damn well too, if you ask me.

Made ya look...

My favorite part of meeting my couples is hearing their story.
Whether it was a funny date or a simple one...I have a hard time looking
at them without thinking about when they first met.

Like below. I can't look at Steven without thinking of how over the

moon it must have been for Megan to go on a date with the man of her dreams.

Come on...life is so unfair. ; )

Megan you're just as beautiful inside as out. I love how kind and thoughtful you are.

A moment...

So when I asked her for her ring to take a picture of it..she said...

'oh, right...I wanted to ask you to do that.

I'm notorious for losing things, so just in case.'
Hmmm...I know they say a picture is worth a thousand words...
but I would be willing to debate this one ; )

Not to be outdone - Megan purchased a customized Tag watch for Steven.

Who knew it could be customized?

A little bit of bling is a good thing...

'Sitting on the dock of the bay....watching the tide roll away...'

Good song.

Sitting..standing...close enough.

I don't believe I have every photographed on a more perfect day EVER.

The temperature was amazing, and the sky put on the most spectacular

show with these puffy, white, marshmallow like clouds everywhere.

People would practically stop in their tracks to admire them.

Cumulus clouds.

Everything I know I learned from Google.

Dock shots are tricky. Most of the time there are a ton of people on them

and the glare from the overhead sun and reflection from the water gives way for squinting.

The best time to hit the dock for pictures is usually early morning or early evening.

We got super lucky though with the intense puffy cloud coverage.

They were a fabulous backdrop, don't you think?

This was such a super cute spot.

I took one shot and we had to give up the location because the sun came out and almost blinded them.

I adore the colors, framing, and how her head is gingerly resting against him.

Expressions sometimes just capture the essence I think.

Annnd we got a smile Megan...

One of my faves from the day.

I like the simplicity of it, and their relaxed, content expressions.
Content. I like that word.

Weeeeee!

As the sun went down, the rain drops started to give way.

It was if they knew to wait until we were done.

Crushes are usually fleeting.

They are a moment in time when the heart pounds a mile a minute,

and your feet feel as if they have wings.

A feeling quite like no other.

Good to know that feeling doesn't have to be fleeting now...a forever crush sounds kinda nice.

The Bucket List - Happy Fall!

It's official.

The beginning of the season started for me today. Each year it's a different day.

But today the weather dipped just cool enough to put a chill in the air for me to light

some candles and pull out the fall decor.

There is something about autumn that is so cozy to me.

The yummy textures of sweaters, the warm colors.

Everything has a golden caramel hue added to it too...like the lighting filtering through the

trees and the brilliance of the leaves.

The scarves come out and hats emerge. And everyone looks like they walked out of a catalog.

There is just something about the fall that pulls a look together.

Maybe it's the chic boots, or the killer layering.

Whatever it is, I love it.

It makes you just want to hug people. No really. Doesn't it? Oh. That's just me?!

Nahh. It can't be.

There is just something extra squishy about someone in a cozy outfit.

You want to reach out and touch them.

The soft cashmere. The plush textures.

Just fabulous!

Perfect 10 - Make-Up Monday

Okay...can we talk hair today?

I know. Always going off on a tangent.

Don't you want to shake me by the shoulders and yell...'MAKE-UP...TODAY IS MAKE-UP'!

I look at nail, hair, and face as beauty products.

Just to clear things up, anything that could be sold at Sephora or Ulta is covered on Make-Up Monday's!

So, let's face it. Sometimes we get a little crazy in between hair appointments and have to box it. We stand in the aisle of the drugstore with a blank look on our faces trying to decipher between ash and golden. We pick up a box and then walk a little further, put it down, and pick up the next box that promises
a little something different.

Is it just me, or do you to forget which color or brand you used last time too?

I finally made friends with drug store hair color when I was preggo with the kids. I found my perfect match...which was actually called 'Perfect 10' by Clariol.

I was in Walmart the other day, and two aisles over I heard a customer ask an employee which hair color was best. The employee went on and on to say that Perfect 10 was her hair color of choice too.
Which lead me to posting about it here today.

Hair is a funny thing. What works for some, may not work for all, so please use caution. I checked out some sites to see how other people rated it and it got about 4 stars.
I like to try to post 5 star products here, but I really feel it is 5 star for me.

What really pulled me in where two things.

10 minutes, and it was a creme application instead of that runny stuff that gets everywhere.

While it's pretty pricey considering the other alternatives on the shelf, I think it's worth it.

I did a quick internet search and found the best prices on Amazon (click on the link to see the colors) at about $8 buck's a box, while drugstores charge around $12.

With the change of season's I'm feeling like trading in the blond locks for red.

I'll let you all know how it goes. I may have to do a blog retraction ; )

Eliza + Michael - Old Brookville, Long Island - Private Estate Wedding

The Beginning

It was hard not to think of Eliza and her sister playing as kids in their backyard.
It was a place that was just sorta magical.
From the moment you walked into their house you were greeted by the amazing view from
the over sized window facing the backyard. Blue azure skies and boats littered the equally blue water.
When I gasped at the sight, Eliza said quite simply 'I never take the view for granted'.

That only cemented the fact that I liked her.
A lot.

They didn't want a lavish wedding. They wanted something small and intimate.

But you know how some things go. Especially weddings.

They seem to all of a sudden take on a life of their own.

As grand as it became though, the celebration had it's charming quieter moments too.

Lantern's swung from tree limbs in bright shades of yellow and orange, and the tents were drawn up
and decorated with beautiful lights that gave off an amber glow when the sun went down.
The private estate was the perfect location for their garden style wedding.

Their day was the last weekend before autumn began

and there was a difference in the air with the changing of seasons...
the feeling of something new about to begin.

Even the clouds started to change as they do this time of year,
by getting lower, dreamy and more dramatic in the sky.

By nightfall the women were wearing the men's suit jackets to bundle up from the chill.
The fire from the open flames of the caterer filled the backyard with the most delicious aroma,
as Eliza and Mike swayed to the band under the tent.

When the start of something new begins there is a sense of appreciation for the moment.

You take it all in.

The sights, the sounds, the smell, the feeling, and the people around you.

And while time may not give us the opportunity to appreciate and be thankful for every single moment -
we can make a moment linger a bit more by appreciating it for all that it's
worth at that exact moment we are in it.
I think Eliza said it best...'never take the view for granted'.

Maybe that's why I love my job.
I witness new beginnings all the time.
Whether it's the start of a marriage, or the birth of your first child...
or a wonderful event or achievement, I get to celebrate it with you in some way.
I laugh at the antics of the guests, adore the relationships I witness, and I cry along with you during vows.
It's personal for me.

Life can get crazy. We forget more then we remember sometimes.

But documenting a moment, holds onto that moment for all that it's worth.
And when you can visit it again and again...to me that's worth the moon and stars.

While going through your images I re-lived your day once again.
Your grace, your appreciation and your love was apparent.
In your beginning, I saw your happy ending.

I remember hearing Eliza say to someone she wanted a picture of the clouds because

she thought they looked so amazing.

Well Eliza, I do have to say...you put them to shame ; )

I love a moment like this. Before or in between a portrait when a relaxed smile comes across their face.

And I swear all she would need are wings to look exactly like an angel...

I fell head over heels for them when they had two hours blocked off before the ceremony for pictures.

It's wonderful to be able to have the luxury of time.

So many times photographer's only have time in between the ceremony and the cocktail hour to do bridal portraits, groom portraits, the bridal party, the couple, and all of the family formals.
Most of the time too, the time gets cut short due to unexpected events or traffic,
so it's nice when there is extra 'padding'.

I think it also gives the bride and groom a relaxed experience.

Yellow just exudes happiness, doesn't it?

I thought the cake looked divine.

I love the whole garden party feel it gave.

Soo the cake toppers started off the beginning of the night facing out (see image above)...
by the end of the night they were making out!

A moment like this you kinda want to keep in your pocket for a rainy day...

Some details....

When the sun went down...
(for all of you photographer's this was ambient light at ISO 10,000 -
the sky was not touched in post processing!)

I had said goodnight to Eliza and Mike and was on my way to my car when
I thought that maybe I could get one last shot.
So I turned around and went back to find them.
If they thought I was crazy, they didn't mention it. Well, at least to me! ; )

It was pitch black outside, but I thought we might be able to capture a bit of the ambiance still.
Looking back now, technically, I would have done things differently, but I still think it caught a nice moment.
(Again, ambient light...at 2.8, 1/30 hand held, 16,000 ISO).

My Top 5:

Favorite Moment: When they read their own vows. *Sob*

Coolest: I thought the pop of yellow on the guys looked waay cool.

Sentimental: When Eliza's Mom saw Eliza doing portraits. Tears were streaming down her face and I couldn't help but think that she was imagining her little girl just as that. Little.

Unique: Personalized flip-flops!!

Funniest: Mike's brother's speech about the 'tropical fish'.

The beginning and the end are usually what is significant - it's what we remember most.
But really it's the 'in-between', the stuff in the middle that make up most days in our lives.
Our day to day routine - is really what life is made of.
And it's up to all of us to decide what to fill those days with.

I hope Eliza and Mike that everyday is an adventure for you.
That each and every day is a new beginning.
A new smile, a shared moment, more kisses, and time spent well.

Live each day as if it was a new beginning, and I can almost assure you a very happy ending.

The Value of Time - Ms. Sarafina's First Birthday Portraits

I see a very good mix of Mom and Dad in this next one.

A balloon to a child, I somtimes think, is like a million dollars to an adult.

Don't believe me?!

Here's further proof.

A child not only teaches us about life and ourselves, but also the value of time.

That it's okay to sit down for a minute to take in the day, the moment, the wonder of it all.

It's okay to leave the dishes in the sink and the laundry in the baskets.

They won't notice.

But you will.

Maybe you'll have a minute longer to think how much has changed since you first met them.

How much they have grown, and really how we have grown within the first year of having a child.

Value is what we make of it.

So make the most out of it.

Sometimes, even for adults...maybe it should be...all about the 'balloon'.

you accomplish so many milestones this year...for life's big ride.

While my blog posts are usually pretty verbose, this one is more to the point.

I'm going to steal the groom's words here, because I think he said it best....

Details...

The gorgeous Italian silk gown was by Peter Langner.

The dupioni silk fabric was woven in a gorgeous pattern of white on white.

Below is Mary's sisters and Mom.

Every time I see family together like that, I always...and I mean always wonder what life was like in their home. What adventures did they have together, what traditions do they maybe still keep?

The prep time is so emotional - it's such a pivotal point I think.

Not only is it the mood of the anticipation growing, but the idea of getting ready to move

on and start your own family.

The. Bow.

On the other side of town...James waits.

Mary, you were such a vision.

I do have to say, Sue, made an exceptional bow. It was totally worth the fuss! ; )

I believe it was her grandmother's.

I loved it!

The ceremony took place at St. Anthony's in East Northport.

The sky was really that vivid.

After the ceremony Mary and James were in the back of a small room waiting to make their

appearance outside the church.

I stole a quick moment.

One of my faves from the day.

Just look at how they look at each other.

The wedding reception took place at the Crescent Beach Club.

It feels as if you are on a cruise ship there.

Fabulous!

Love how the sky was the same color as the girls dresses.

It wasn't even enhanced!

It just looked like you painted beautiful water colors across the sky to match them.

My Top 5:

Favorite: When Mary and James kissed through out the night...they really kissed.

Not that quick peck stuff - a kiss that lingers a moment or two.

Coolest: Okay, I wasn't really there for it but I think it still counts. Mary went to Kleinfeld in Manhattan to get her dress, and she had her picture taken with the 'Say Yes to the Dress' cast. Pretty cool if you ask me.

Sentimental: Mary's 'something old' was a locket pin that was sewn into the inside of her dress. Super sweet.

Unique: The potato bar. No really. You had to see it. All different kinds of potato's and toppings. They had sweet potato's with bowls of brown sugar and marshmallows, and mashed potato's with melted cheddar and real bacon. They served them in fancy stemware too. Mmmmm.

Funniest: When Mary put the ring on his wrong hand.

Sweet - Steven and Veronica - West Sayville Country Club

Something changes when you have kids.

The dynamics seem to sorta shift...and no longer are you a couple, but a family.

There is a greater love, and an even more special bond. You look at your husband or wife differently.

Not only are they your best friend and lover..they are now the parent of your child.

It's different.

It's sweeter.

It is the hardest job...yet most rewarding, and to share it with someone you love makes it even more amazing.

Our hearts get bigger and we share more, love more, laugh more then we ever thought possible.

Maybe it was the mason jar centerpieces...or perhaps her birdcage veil and the stunning location that made their day

feel unique and fabulous.

Or maybe it was the fact that they had planned the wedding within two months, all the while taking care of their children

(a four month old, two and a half year old and a seven year old).

Oh.

And let's not forget about the new home they bought during that time too.

Talk about having your hands full!
I'm pretty sure there are capes under their clothes. ; )

When you have children, there is an even greater commitment and responsibility to preserving the love that has brought and bound you together. Tying the knot now takes on another meaning completely.

Life was sweet, and yet it somehow just got a heck of a lot sweeter!

The ceremony and wedding reception took place at the West Sayville Country Club.

I adored photographing there.

The grounds were beautiful and the dance floor faced a wall of windows which

made it very nice for pictures!

When the limo pulled up at West Sayville Country Club, and Veronica stepped out - you gasped a little.
Okay, alot.
She just had that effect. So glamorous and elegant.

I like how the window lead kind of mirrors the birdcage.
Little things like that make me happy!

Something blue...

Sooo...it goes without saying that photographer's love 'first looks'.
While it's not super traditional, it's sweet as heck.
It also allows some extra time to take pictures of the couple,
instead of squeezing them in between the ceremony and reception, or during the cocktail hour.
It's a bit more relaxed too.
While it may not be for everyone, it's definitely something to think about.

They did this on their own during the 'first look' - it wasn't posed.

Here, Dad was 'giving away' his daughter after their walk down the aisle.

Look at the look of happiness on both his face and his son-in-laws face - they can hardly shake hands.

The nice thing about having the ceremony outdoors is that you have the ability to roam
around a bit more to get different angles of the bride and groom.

I love the ascot and tails.

The ceremony and reception was held at Lombardi's on the Bay.

So, the first dance was about to begin, when Chris took off his jacket...and shoes.

We waited for a ballad to begin...when Chuck Berry came over the speakers.
Then all of a sudden they began to 'twist' to the lyrics,

'they had a teenage wedding and the old folks wished them well...

"c'est la vie," say the old folks, "it goes to show you never can tell."

I couldn't agree more ; )

The colors were beautiful.

Favorite part: The twist!

Here is a quick minute of it...

Coolest part: I'm going to have to go with the tails and ascot - even though the bikes were up there.

Sentimental: Maid of honor speech.

Unique: I loved the favors. Lenox botanical bowls. So different!

Funniest: The best man speech when he spoke about 'woo-woo'.

Wipe Out - Make-Up Monday

Sooo...I have to apologize for not keeping up on Make-up Monday.

It has been a busy couple of weeks,

and I was a little bit behind not having my computer for a while with hurricane Irene.

Let's talk essentials.

I thought I would touch upon my all time favorite beauty product.

While it doesn't necessarily help with beauty, it helps in a round about way.

Baby Wipes.

Before I even had kids I was looking for a more reasonable, less greasy alternative to make up removers.

I needed something hypoallergenic and non-scented which left me with only Almay.

And at five or six bucks for a small container - it just wasn't cutting it.

I picked up Costco baby wipes on a whim and have been hooked ever since. I'm actually a bit obsessed to tell you the truth. They are not only great for gently removing make-up but also for a heck of a lot of other things. I use them for quick dusting, cleaning the dash of the car, removing stains, the office...really anywhere. I really can't live without them.

Do you have a beauty product you can't live without or another use

for baby wipes other then with the baby?

Here are a few more useful ideas I came across:

Removes crayon marks from painted walls or finished furniture.

Excellent for cleaning shoes.

Clean up shards of glass off floors after an accident.

Touch up bathrooms between cleanings.

(Wipe down counters and faucets with the wipe and then with a dry towel: great for unexpected guest!)

Clean dashboard and console of your car.

Remove "white marks" from deodorant on clothes.

Wipe down shower or tub after each use to prevent soap scum.

Remove stray hairs from a shedding pet.

Dust your furniture or electronic equipment with clean dried-out wipes.

Clean tile grout.

Remove scuff marks off of floors.

Erase felt tip and marker accidents before they become permanent. (You must act quickly for this to work.)

Clean you PC's keyboard. (Make sure to unplug it from the computer first!)

Cool a sunburn by patting it with a baby wipe. (Aloe wipes work best for this.)

Seeds of Change - Remembering 9/11

I kneeled on the hard concrete outside of my office to try to get a picture with

my phone's camera of the delicate daisy

that managed to squeeze itself in between the cracks of the cement.

It was bright yellow and white and looked tall and proud.

I loved the fact that the flower (under such tremendous odds), grew, bloomed

and thrived in such harsh conditions.

I wanted a picture to remind me of the smile it gave me.

Sixty miles away, at the same time...a plane had just crashed into the

north tower of the World Trade Center.

Only sixty miles away, yet worlds apart.

And in mere seconds lives were changing forever.

Words were tumbling from the mouths of people on the street and the radio

was filled with the horrific details of what was happening minute by minute.

2,819 innocent victims - wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters were not going to be coming home. Ever again.

Tears streamed down our faces as we stood, breathless.

We heard the words and felt the panic...yet couldn't come to the realization of what was actually happening until the vivid imagery began.

The desperation, the fear and the unfathomable pictures of what people were experiencing

and witnessing at that second was almost to much to bare.

Our hearts were breaking watching the people weep while holding on

to one another in thick dust and ash.

I remember the dis-belief. I remember fearing the unknown.

I remember thinking I wanted it all to go away,

yet when I picked up the paper and turned on the tv there it was again.

And the more I didn't want to see it, the more I would find myself looking for it.

A picture has that effect. It has the power to make you feel.

Whether the emotion is sadness, desperation, fear, love, hope or happiness.

What we hold is not just a piece of paper, it's history. It's seeing the truth...however ugly or pretty that truth might be.

We are forever changed by a vision.

We become more compassion and we can relate more then we ever thought possible because of it.

Seeing is in fact believing.

The imagery from 9/11 brought our country closer. It impacted us all to the core of our souls.

In a world that leaves little time these days for passing time with our neighbors,

it forced us to unite with one another.

I have often wondered since that day what it would have been like to not have experienced the imagery of 9/11.

Would we have known the devastation by mere words?

Would we have believed the stories or were the images a narration

of the events and heartache?

Could it have ever been described in words alone?

I have always known the importance of a picture...but I didn't know the effect, until that day.

That a single image can bring a country to it's knees...

and yet still...unite our resolve and resilience.

Beyond the gray and bleak pictures of a city that once was, were the faces of raw emotion.

People clinging to strangers, as the country was clinging to hope.

Where the Twin Towers once stood tall and proud was a gaping hole like what was felt in our hearts.

Among the rubble now, in it's place stood our American flag the same way...tall and proud.

A small, but meaningful paradox among the ruins.

In a way it reminded me of that flower I saw hours earlier.

A seed that we needed to sow...and

'from a small seed, a mighty trunk may grow.'

Ten years today we still mourn while picking up the pieces of our past.

However, we use those same very pieces to help us build a better tomorrow.

A Present...

I stood in line listening to the folks around me talk about the impending hurricane.

They were sharing last minute tips and offering suggestions on where to find batteries in case of a power outage.

They were holding cases of water, purchasing garbage pails and lighters

and their voices had a worried tone.

I glanced down at my cart and thought to myself they must think I have gone mad.

My cart was filled to the brim of not necessities, but rather the opposite.

Play Dough, lollipop flashlights (I know...genius, right?), paint, a box of 64 brand spanking

new crayons and enough snacks to invite the county.

If we were goin' down, we were going to go down having a ball.

It was 'insurance' in a way too.

I wanted to make sure my kids lived to tell about it.

You know, just in case I had to spend 96 freakin' hours with them...

their odds didn't look good without entertainment. ; )

Day 1 - The wind was barely kicking up when we lost electricity.

While we should have been using the batteries for the flashlights,

we were using them to blare happy Christmas music from the 'Hello Kitty' radio.

We broke out the Play Dough waaay too early and spent the next three hours playing.

Who knew, I could be occupied that long without my computer?!

While three hours sounds like an eternity playing play dough...there were ten more hours to go.

And that was just day one.

We laughed, we talked...and pretended we were camping.

We built tents in the living room and read by flashlight.

Remember back in the day when a simple card board box could keep you occupied for hours?

Well...thank God boxes still exist.

Day 2 - Was our 'wacky' day. We wore our clothes backwards and ate dinner for breakfast.

Being unconventional just seemed to sorta fit and it made it a bit more

fun to get through the endless day.

I don't remember much of the the events now, but I do remember that I spent

the day noticing the different specks of colors in my children's eyes and

how the window light highlighted and shadowed their faces.

No artificial light to muck it all up, just pure, yummy, diffused, lovely light.

I was glad I had a moment to stop and soak it all in.

So many days I'm wishing it away...but this day, I was not.

We slept with the window's wide open feeling the amazing breeze

left over from Irene and talked about pumpkin picking before falling asleep.

Day 3 - The novelty was wearing off a little but who was I to complain.

I wasn't sure how the rest of the world was fairing and we were all safe.

We played the Christmas CD once again, but Alvin and the Chipmunks

were starting to get on my nerves...especially when played on repeat.

I cursed the toys I tripped over, and cursed the water that was ice cold.

I was tired, exhausted...and ready for the adventure to come to a screeching halt.

Day 4 - Packed the kids up and headed to the aquarium.

For some reason I didn't take into consideration that the rest of the Island

would have had the same idea.

Sighhhh....

Exhausted, cranky, and defeated...we pulled up in the driveway and saw the porch light on.

I swear I heard angles singing.

We yelled, screamed and did a happy dance walking in.

While we were walking into the house Ms. V said 'Mom, the lights are back on...are you happy?'

It was a catch 22 in a way.

Happy for the convenience...yes.

Annnd happy because I enjoyed a simpler world that they let me have without them for a few days too.

My love hate relationship is with this 'Hello Kitty' radio.

With an Ipod that has over 14,000 songs, a CD changer with over 500 discs,

and an amazing entertainment system and speakers...I listen to this.

Sighhhh...

Parenthood!

You thought I was kidding...

Three hours...for real!

May I suggest a great holiday gift?! ; )

I'm ashamed that I relied on DS to occupy my daughter....desperate times...desperate measures.

I took ummm...like two pictures at the aquarium.

While, I guess you can't be thankful for a hurricane especially after hearing about the suffering and devastation.

But. A part of me was selfish. I was thankful.

I was thankful for the time I had to step away from the hustle and bustle.

To pay attention to every word, and every syllable coming out of my children's mouths.

No place to go, nothing to do...no one to see.

It was a forced vacation.

I took advantage of the time away from the computer...phone...laundry...heck...even cooking

( I kid...I don't cook ; ) to take it all in.

To be present...in the present.

Because after all...it was a present.

Hurricane Irene

Hello All!

This is Stacey's sister.

She wanted me to post an update in lieu of the events of Hurricane Irene.

Unfortunately, she has been without power since Saturday. Her cell phone service has been choppy, but over the broken calls and animated shrills of her little ones, I was able to hear her say that she is hoping for internet service, any kind of service, within the next twenty-four hours.

Let's keep our fingers crossed.

As soon as the power is restored, she will answer all e-mails and update her blog. :)

Thursday's Thought for the Day - The Last Time

Too Faced - Make- Up Monday

I have always been the girl that has been a sucker for a good name.

A product name. I love clever. I love witty. I love ironic.

It makes me happier when I know that the name of my lipstick I picked for the day is called 'Gutsy'.
I know. I'm a little strange.

Sooo...maybe I was a little bias purchasing this product based on the name...'Too Faced'.

It claimed to be a multi-tasker. It was able to create a naked, sexy and romantic styled look for the eyes.

Wait...isn't that 'Three-faced'? ; )

It totally didn't disappoint. I love every single color.

Bad news though...this was a limited edition collection that is no longer available.

***sighhh***

I thought about not reviewing it, but it's just too good not too.

While my palette collection comes with all the shadow's...it seems
'Too Faced' normally does a small collection for each eye look. Like the the one below.

The 'Naked Eye - Soft and Sexy Eye' collection includes: 9 essential pure-pigment shadows
which provide a range of matte neutrals and soft shimmers for the perfect balance and variety. T
he names are super fun too...

Birthday Suit ( a beige shimmer)

'Too Faced' actually made me a bit happier after I applied it.

IWhat was actually better then that was when I caught a glimpse of myself seven hours later.

The shadow was still there and as fresh as if I just swiped it on.

The first shadow ever to have such a long life span after I applied it.

The reviews on the shadow at Sephora are phenomenal. 5 Star across the board!
